The Composites Research Network (CRN) is proud to showcase how advanced composite materials research is improving healthcare. CRN engineers partnered with Dr. Cheryl Duzenli from the University of British Columbia and BC Cancer to develop CARA, a lightweight carbon‑fibre device that enhances precision and comfort in breast radiotherapy.
Designing a solution that accommodates a wide range of body types required extensive prototyping, volunteer testing, and expertise in ultralight composites. The result is a universal device that supports consistent positioning across treatment sessions, reducing side effects and improving patient comfort. Early feedback from patients and therapists has been overwhelmingly positive.
