Dr. Goran Fernlund is an Associate Professor in Materials Engineering and the Technical Director of the Composites Research Network at The University of British Columbia (UBC). After getting an undergraduate engineering degree in his native Sweden he received his PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Toronto. He has wide research interests, but currently his main areas of research are composites processing, process simulation, risk and uncertainty. He is passionate about learning and teaching and finds the time spent with the students the highlight of his academic life. He recently received the UBC Killam teaching award for his contribution in this area.
When he joined UBC as a post-doctoral fellow in 1995, Dr. Fernlund quickly found the traditional methods of innovation and technology transfer in academia limited and constraining, and started a spin-off company with colleagues. Since 1998 he is the Director of Engineering at Convergent Manufacturing Technologies, a company that provides training, simulation software, hardware systems and R&D support for the composites aerospace industry world-wide.
